Why East Bay Is Perfect for Wading

East Galveston Bay runs along the north side of the Bolivar Peninsula. The water is shallow, rarely more than waist-deep within a few hundred yards of shore. The bottom is a mix of firm mud, sand, and turtle grass. That grass holds shrimp, crabs, and small fish, which brings in the species you want to catch.

Wade fishing here feels different from boat fishing. You're in the water with the fish. You can see redfish tailing 20 yards away. You feel the mullet bumping your legs. It's a more connected experience, and the fish aren't spooked by a hull overhead.

What to Wear and Bring

Wading boots or old sneakers are the minimum. Stingray guards are strongly recommended. Southern stingrays live in the bay, and stepping on one will send you to the ER. Shuffle your feet as you walk to push them out of the way.

Redfish are the main target for wade fishermen in East Bay. They feed on the grass flats, especially during incoming tides when shrimp and crabs wash in. Look for tailing fish in the shallows. A gold spoon or live shrimp cast in front of a tailing red is about as good as wade fishing gets.

Speckled trout hold along drop-offs and near structure. They prefer slightly deeper water than redfish, so work the edges where the grass meets the sand. Soft plastic jigs on 1/8-ounce heads are the standard trout lure. Chartreuse and white are reliable colors.

Tide and Weather Matter

Incoming tides are generally better for wade fishing. Fresh water pushing onto the flats brings bait, and the fish follow. Outgoing tides concentrate fish in deeper pockets and channels.

Wind direction changes everything on East Bay. A south wind pushes water onto the flats and improves fishing. A strong north wind drains the bay and makes it too shallow in places. Check the wind forecast before you go. Anything over 20 mph makes wade fishing uncomfortable.

Best Seasons for Wade Fishing

Spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) are the top seasons. Water temps in the 65-80 degree range fire up the bite. Spring sees spawning trout moving onto the flats. Fall brings the bull redfish run, with big fish cruising the shallows before heading to the Gulf to spawn.

Summer is fishable but tough. Go early, before 9 AM. The water gets warm and the fish move to deeper, cooler spots by midday. Winter wade fishing can be excellent on warm-up days when the water temp bumps up a few degrees after a cold front passes.
