Two Sides, Two Experiences

The Bolivar Peninsula has water on both sides. East Bay sits to the north. The Gulf of Mexico is to the south. This gives you two completely different paddling experiences within a short drive of each other.

The bay side is shallow, calm, and protected from Gulf swells. That makes it ideal for kayaking, especially if you're a beginner or bringing kids. The Gulf side has open water and waves. Paddleboarding works there on calm mornings, but it's not the place to go when conditions are rough.

Bay Side Kayaking on East Bay

East Bay is the go-to for kayaking on the Bolivar Peninsula. The water is usually flat, rarely more than a few feet deep close to shore. Grass flats line the bottom, and you'll see redfish, trout, and mullet cruising through.

Fishing from a kayak is popular here. Paddle out to a grass flat, drop anchor, and cast. The bay produces year-round, but spring and fall are prime time for redfish. Even if you're not fishing, the bay is a great paddle. Quiet water, birds everywhere, and no boat traffic to worry about in most spots.

Wind can be a factor. Check the forecast before heading out. If winds are above 15 mph, the bay gets choppy and paddling back becomes a workout.

Gulf Side Paddleboarding

Stand-up paddleboarding on the Gulf side is best done early in the morning before the wind picks up. On calm days, the water along Crystal Beach can be glassy. Those mornings are perfect for a SUP session.

Check surf conditions before you go out. Even small waves can knock you off a paddleboard if you're not ready. Stay close to shore and avoid areas near jetties where currents can pull you. The Gulf is not a lake. Respect it.

Where to Launch

Bay access points along the peninsula are limited but they exist. There are a few public spots along Highway 87 where you can park and carry a kayak to the water. Look for areas where the road runs close to the bay.

On the Gulf side, you can launch a paddleboard from any stretch of beach. Crystal Beach allows vehicles on the sand, so you can drive your gear right to the waterline. That makes loading and unloading easy.

Rentals and Gear

Kayak and paddleboard rentals are limited in Crystal Beach. There's no major outfitter on the peninsula. Your best bet is to bring your own or rent in Galveston before taking the ferry over. A few Galveston shops offer daily and weekly rentals.

Some vacation rentals in Crystal Beach include kayaks or paddleboards as amenities. Ask before you book if that matters to you. Inflatable paddleboards travel well and are worth considering if you're driving in.

Wildlife on the Water

Dolphins are common in the waters around the Bolivar Peninsula. You'll often spot them from a kayak on the bay side, especially in the morning. They feed along the grass flats and aren't shy about coming close.

Birdlife is constant. Roseate spoonbills, great blue herons, pelicans, and egrets are regulars. Bolivar Flats, a major birding area, sits at the west end of the peninsula near the ferry landing. Paddling near there during migration season is something special.
