Crystal Beach is a small, unincorporated community on the Bolivar Peninsula. It's mostly vacation rentals and year-round residents. Crime is low. This isn't a big tourist strip with pickpockets and scams. It's a chill beach town where people leave their beach chairs out overnight and wave at strangers.

Galveston County Sheriff's Office handles law enforcement on the peninsula. You'll see deputies on the beach during busy weekends and holidays, mostly dealing with traffic issues and the occasional noise complaint. Violent crime is rare.

Water Safety: No Lifeguards

There are no lifeguards at Crystal Beach. None. You are responsible for your own safety and the safety of your group in the water. This is the most important safety consideration.

Rip currents are a real hazard in the Gulf of Mexico. They can form anywhere along the beach and pull even strong swimmers offshore quickly. If you get caught in a rip current, don't fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the pull, then swim back in. Teach your kids this before you get in the water.

The Gulf water is often murky, and you can't always see what's beneath you. Shuffle your feet when walking into the water to avoid stepping on stingrays. This is called the "stingray shuffle" and it's standard practice on the Texas coast.

Jellyfish, Sunburn, and Heat

Jellyfish show up at Crystal Beach, especially in warmer months. Portuguese man-of-wars wash up on the sand periodically. Don't touch them, even dead ones on the beach. Their tentacles can still sting. If you get stung by a jellyfish, rinse with vinegar or saltwater (not fresh water) and see a doctor if you have a severe reaction.

Sunburn is probably the most common injury at Crystal Beach. The Gulf Coast sun is intense, and the reflection off the water and sand makes it worse. Wear sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), reapply every two hours, and bring a shade canopy or umbrella. Heat exhaustion is a real risk in summer. Stay hydrated. Drink water, not just beer.

Lock Your Car, Use Common Sense

If you park your vehicle on the beach, lock it. Don't leave valuables visible. Petty theft from vehicles does happen, especially on crowded weekends. Keep your wallet, phone, and keys on you or locked in the glovebox.

At your rental, lock the doors when you leave. This is basic stuff, but people get relaxed on vacation and forget. Crystal Beach is safe, but there's no reason to make things easy for anyone with bad intentions.

Hurricane Awareness

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The Bolivar Peninsula was devastated by Hurricane Ike in 2008, and residents here take hurricane threats seriously. If a tropical storm or hurricane is headed for the Gulf Coast, pay attention to Galveston County emergency management.

If a mandatory evacuation order is issued for the Bolivar Peninsula, leave. There is essentially one road off the peninsula (Highway 87 to Highway 124). Once conditions deteriorate, the ferry stops running and you're stuck. Don't wait. Monitor NOAA weather forecasts during hurricane season and have a plan.
