How to Get to Crystal Beach, Texas

Crystal Beach is on the Bolivar Peninsula in Galveston County. You can drive directly from Houston or take the free ferry from Galveston. Here is everything you need to know.

Driving from Houston

The drive from Houston to Crystal Beach takes about 90 minutes without heavy traffic. Head east on I-10, then turn south on Highway 124. Follow 124 through Winnie and High Island until it connects with Highway 87. Turn right on 87 and you are on the Bolivar Peninsula. Crystal Beach is about 10 miles down the road.

This route skips the Galveston Ferry entirely. No waiting, no scheduling. It is the fastest and most predictable way to get to Crystal Beach. Fill up your gas tank in Winnie because options on the peninsula are limited.

Traffic is usually light except on summer holiday weekends. If you are arriving on a Friday before a long weekend, leave Houston early to avoid the I-10 East congestion near Baytown.

Taking the Galveston-Bolivar Ferry

If you are coming from Galveston Island, the free Galveston-Bolivar Ferry connects the east end of Seawall Boulevard to the western tip of the Bolivar Peninsula. The crossing takes about 18 to 20 minutes. Ferries run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Here is the catch: summer weekends can mean long waits. Friday afternoons and Sunday mornings often have lines stretching 30 to 60 minutes or more. Go early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the worst of it. Weekdays are usually quick, 10 to 15 minutes of wait time at most.

The ferry ride itself is worth doing at least once. You can get out of your car, stand on the upper deck, and watch for dolphins. They follow the ferry regularly. It is one of those small Texas coast experiences that people remember.

From Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio

From Dallas/Fort Worth, plan on about 5 hours of driving. Take I-45 South through Houston, then follow the Houston directions above: I-10 East to Highway 124 South to Highway 87. This keeps you off the ferry.

From San Antonio, the drive is about 4.5 hours. Take I-10 East all the way through Houston, then Highway 124 South and Highway 87 to the peninsula. The route is straightforward and mostly highway.

Both drives are easy with one fuel stop. The stretch from Houston to Crystal Beach is the only part where you need to pay attention to gas stations. Fill up in Winnie.

Airport Access and Car Rentals

The closest major airports are George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby (HOU), both in Houston. IAH is about 2 hours from Crystal Beach. Hobby is slightly closer at around 1 hour 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

You will need a rental car. There is no public transportation, rideshare, or shuttle service to Crystal Beach. All the major rental car companies operate at both Houston airports. A standard SUV or sedan works fine; you do not need a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Driving on the Bolivar Peninsula

Highway 87 is the only main road on the Bolivar Peninsula. It is a two-lane highway that runs the full length of the peninsula from the ferry landing to High Island. Speed limits are 55 mph on the open stretches and lower through Crystal Beach proper.

Watch for beach access roads branching off Highway 87 toward the Gulf side. Your vacation rental will likely be on one of these side roads or on a beachfront street. Cell service can be spotty in some areas, so download your directions before you arrive.

There is no stoplight on the entire peninsula. One gas station operates in Crystal Beach, and it can be pricier than mainland options. The Dollar General on Highway 87 covers basic needs, but serious shopping requires a trip to Winnie or across the ferry to Galveston.
