Free Things to Do in Crystal Beach, Texas

The beach is free. The ferry is free. The sunsets are free. Here are the best things to do at Crystal Beach that don't cost anything.

The Beach Itself

This is the obvious one, but it's worth saying: Crystal Beach has no beach access fee. You can drive onto the sand, set up camp, and spend the entire day without spending a dime. Compare that to Galveston's Stewart Beach at $12 per vehicle. Swim, wade, build sandcastles, throw a football, or just sit in a chair and do nothing. All free.

The beach stretches for miles along the Bolivar Peninsula. Even on busy weekends, you can drive down the beach and find a stretch with plenty of space. Head east toward Gilchrist or High Island for the quietest spots.

Birding at Bolivar Flats

Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary is one of the best birding spots on the entire Texas coast. It's free to visit. Located near the tip of the peninsula close to the ferry landing, it's home to roseate spoonbills, black skimmers, various terns, plovers, and hundreds of other species.

The Houston Audubon Society manages the sanctuary. Spring and fall migration seasons are the most spectacular, with thousands of shorebirds stopping over. Bring binoculars. Even if you're not a serious birder, it's impressive to see.

The Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry

The ferry ride between Galveston and Port Bolivar is completely free. It's an 18-minute crossing with great views of Galveston Bay, dolphins, pelicans, and huge cargo ships. Kids love it. It's honestly fun even for adults.

You can walk up to the top deck and feel the Gulf breeze while the ferry crosses the channel. Keep an eye out for bottlenose dolphins. They follow the ferries regularly, playing in the wake. Bring your camera.

Shell Collecting and Beachcombing

Crystal Beach isn't the best shell beach in Texas (that would be the Padre Island area), but you can still find good stuff. Lightning whelks, coquina shells, sand dollars, and the occasional intact conch wash up after storms. Early morning is the best time, before other people have walked the beach.

Beachcombing after a storm or strong tide can turn up interesting finds. Driftwood, sea glass, crab traps, and the odd fishing lure. Kids especially love treasure hunting along the tide line.

Stargazing and Sunsets

Crystal Beach faces west, so sunsets over the Gulf are spectacular. Every evening. For free. Grab a chair, a cold drink, and watch the sky light up. The lack of development on the peninsula means relatively little light pollution, which makes for solid stargazing after dark.

On clear nights, you can see a surprising number of stars from the beach. It's not Big Bend-level dark sky, but it's way better than what you'll see from Houston or Galveston. Bring a blanket, lie on the sand, and look up.

Fishing from Shore

Surf fishing is popular at Crystal Beach. You do need a Texas saltwater fishing license, which costs $35 for residents. But standing on the beach and casting into the surf is free in terms of access. People catch speckled trout, redfish, whiting, and croaker right from the sand.

The jetties near the ferry landing at Port Bolivar are another free fishing spot. They hold sheepshead, drum, and occasional flounder. Bring your own gear. There are no bait shops right on the beach, so stock up beforehand.
