Best Places to See Dolphins

The Bolivar Ferry is the best free dolphin-watching experience on the upper Texas coast. Dolphins regularly swim alongside the ferry as it crosses between Galveston and Port Bolivar. They ride the wake and play in the bow wave. Stand on the lower deck near the railing for the closest view. The ferry runs every 20 minutes and the ride takes about 18 minutes.

From the Crystal Beach shoreline, look for dolphins during calm mornings. They tend to feed closer to shore when the water is flat. The stretch of beach near the Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary and the jetty area at the east end of the peninsula are good spots.

Best Time of Day for Dolphin Watching

Early morning is the best time. Between 7 and 10 AM, dolphins are actively feeding near the surface. The water is usually calmer in the morning too, which makes dorsal fins easier to spot. Late afternoon can also be good, especially on calm days.

Midday is the worst time. The sun glare on the water makes it hard to see anything, and dolphins tend to be less active during the hottest part of the day.

How to Watch Responsibly

Don't feed dolphins. It's illegal under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and it changes their natural behavior. Dolphins that learn to associate people with food become aggressive and dependent. It's bad for them and dangerous for you.

If you're in a boat, don't chase or approach dolphins closer than 50 yards. If dolphins approach your boat on their own, that's fine. Just don't alter course to follow them. The same law that protects whales applies to dolphins. Harassment carries fines up to $100,000.
