Prevailing Southeast Wind

For most of the year, the dominant wind at Crystal Beach comes from the south or southeast. This is the sea breeze off the Gulf. It typically picks up mid-morning as the land heats up and the pressure differential pulls in cooler air from the water. By afternoon, sustained winds of 10 to 20 mph are normal.

The southeast wind is actually pleasant in the warmer months. It keeps the bugs away, moderates the heat somewhat, and makes sitting on the beach tolerable even in July. Without the sea breeze, summer days on the peninsula would be even more brutal. The breeze is your friend.

Winter Northers

Cold fronts from October through March bring strong north and northwest winds. These are called 'northers' on the Texas coast. Wind speeds of 20 to 30 mph are common during and after a frontal passage. Gusts can hit 40 to 50 mph with strong fronts.

Northers push water out of Galveston Bay and away from the beach. Water levels can drop 2 to 3 feet below normal during a strong north wind event. The exposed flats are great for shelling and beachcombing. The wind chill can make a 50-degree day feel like the 30s though. Layer up when a norther is blowing.

Spring (March-May) is the windiest season at Crystal Beach. Average sustained winds run 12 to 18 mph with frequent gusts above 20. The combination of southerly sea breezes and passing weather systems keeps things breezy. Beach tents and umbrellas need heavy anchoring in spring or they'll end up in the Gulf.

Summer (June-August) winds average 8 to 14 mph. Calmer than spring. Morning can be nearly still before the sea breeze kicks in. Fall is moderate at 10 to 15 mph. Winter is variable: calm between fronts, then 20 to 30+ mph during and after cold front passages.

Wind and Beach Activities

Wind directly affects what you can do at the beach. Light winds under 10 mph are great for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Moderate winds of 10 to 20 mph are fine for surf fishing and kite flying. Above 20 mph, sand starts blowing and beach umbrellas become projectiles.

Kiteboarders love Crystal Beach. The consistent SE winds in summer and the flat, shallow water on the bay side make it a solid spot for kiting. Winds of 15 to 25 mph are ideal for kiting, and Crystal Beach delivers those conditions regularly from April through October.

Protecting Your Stuff from Wind

Wind is a fact of life on the peninsula. Secure your beach tent with sand anchors, not the little plastic stakes that come in the package. Those stakes do nothing in the wind here. Fill bags with sand and clip them to the tent legs. Or use screw-type sand anchors that hold much better.

At your rental, bring in or tie down anything on the deck that could blow away. Chairs, coolers, pool floats, and trash cans all go airborne in strong wind. Before a cold front arrives, do a walk around the property and secure loose items. A flying plastic chair can damage a car or window.
