Summer Water Temps: June Through September

This is when the Gulf is warm. Water temperatures at Crystal Beach run between 82 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit from June through September. August is typically the warmest month. The water feels like a warm bath on the hottest days.

At these temperatures, you can stay in the water for hours without getting cold. Kids especially love it. The warm water also means more jellyfish, so keep an eye out. Sea lice (tiny larvae that cause itchy red bumps) are more common in warm water too.

Spring: March Through May

Swimming in winter isn't common. Some people do cold-water wading for fishing, wearing waders or neoprene. The beach is still nice for walking and beachcombing. Just don't expect to go for a swim unless you're very cold-tolerant.

The shallow nearshore water heats up and cools down faster than the open Gulf. On a calm, sunny summer day, the water in the first few feet can feel warmer than the deeper water just past the sandbars. After heavy rain, freshwater runoff can also cool the nearshore water temporarily.
