What's on the Peninsula

The Bolivar Peninsula has limited grocery options. There's no HEB, Kroger, or Walmart on the peninsula. What you have is a few small stores that carry the basics: bread, eggs, milk, beer, charcoal, bait, and sunscreen. Stingaree Restaurant & Marina has a small store attached. You can grab essentials there in a pinch.

A few other small shops and gas stations along Highway 87 sell snacks, drinks, and basic supplies. But if you need anything beyond the bare minimum, you're making a trip off the peninsula. This is the number one thing first-time visitors underestimate about Crystal Beach.

Driving to Winnie for Groceries

Most Crystal Beach locals and repeat visitors do their big grocery shopping in Winnie, Texas. It's about a 30 to 40 minute drive north on Highway 87 to Interstate 10. Winnie has a Walmart Supercenter, a Dollar General, and a few other stores.

The Walmart in Winnie is the go-to for most people staying on the peninsula. Stock up before you head down to the beach. If you're coming from Houston, stop at a grocery store on your way through instead of backtracking later. That saves you over an hour of round-trip driving.

Taking the Ferry to Galveston

Galveston Island has full grocery stores including Kroger and Randalls. The catch is you have to take the Bolivar Ferry to get there. The ferry ride itself is about 18 minutes, but wait times can add 30 minutes to over an hour during busy weekends and holidays.

For a quick grocery run, Galveston usually isn't worth the ferry wait. But if you're already planning a day trip to Galveston for sightseeing or dining, pick up groceries while you're there. The Kroger on 61st Street is closest once you get off the ferry and head into town.

What to Bring With You

The smart move is to pack a cooler and bring your groceries from home or stop on the way. If you're coming from the Houston area, there are grocery stores all along I-10. The last convenient stop is in Winnie before you turn south toward the peninsula.

Stock up on everything you need for your stay. Think about breakfast items, lunch supplies, drinks, and snacks. Fresh meat and produce are especially hard to find on the peninsula. Bring enough for your whole trip and save yourself the hassle of a supply run.

Restaurants as an Alternative

If cooking isn't your thing, Crystal Beach has a handful of restaurants. Stingaree is the most well-known. There are also a few seafood spots, a pizza place, and some food trucks that show up seasonally. Don't expect a huge selection though.

On weekends and during summer, some of the restaurants get busy and wait times can be long. Having food at the rental house gives you a backup plan. At minimum, bring breakfast supplies and snacks so you're not relying entirely on restaurants for every meal.
